Mark Zuckerberg’s Jiu Jitsu Journey started in 2021 during the pandemic, and he is a BJJ White Belt today. He trains under coach Dave Camarillo of Guerilla Jiu-Jitsu.
The billionaire and founder of Facebook have made the step from casual athlete to BJJ competitor and doesn’t plan on quitting anytime soon, as he calls Jiu Jitsu the best sport.

Why Mark Zuckerberg Loves Brazilian Jiu Jitsu
On The Joe Rogan Experience Podcast #1863, Mark Zuckerberg explains that he was looking for something that is “physically but also intellectually engaging”.
He goes on to explain that MMA is the perfect thing because it has these qualities and “you can’t afford to focus on something else”.
Mark describes the mental benefits Jiu Jitsu offers for him personally:
“After an hour or two of working out or rolling or wrestling with friends it’s like now I’m ready to go.”
He as hooked from his first BJJ lesson:
“The very first session I did, like 5 minutes in, I thought where has this been my whole life?”
He then introduced several friends to BJJ and claims a “100% hit rate” when it comes to his friends liking the sport.
“The hardest things is when you know that you are in a tough position that you know you need to push through”.
He especially appreciates that the feedback loops for Jiu Jitsu techniques are immediate, contrary to the feedback loops for new products in business.

Joe acknowledges how strange the situation at Mark Zuckerberg’s first Jiu Jitsu tournament must have been when his opponent found out he has to fight one of the most famous people in the world.
“Imagine when you are right about to compete and maybe it’s your first competition […] and then you get strangled by a super nerd in front of the whole world.”
But Joe also adds:
“I’m super proud of him. I think it’s amazing.”
